Top Tax Lawyer Douglas Powrie Joins BLG
Heads firm's Vancouver tax practice; mandate includes national goals
Vancouver (April 8, 2008) – Douglas Powrie, one of Canada's most respected tax lawyers, has joined the Vancouver office of Borden Ladner Gervais LLP as a partner and head of its regional tax practice. In addition to serving regional clients, he will help expand the firm's respected national tax practice.
"I came to BLG because I'm excited by the opportunity to continue doing quality work with great clients and to add a new dimension to my career - building on work with commercial clients of a top-tier national full-service firm to grow the tax practice," said Mr. Powrie. "My initial mandate is to serve and expand tax work in the Vancouver regional office but I'll be a resource to the national tax practice, which has a solid base and is well positioned for growth."
Mr. Powrie said he is looking forward to not only expanding the client base of BLG's tax practice but to ensuring the firm is the premier destination for the country's very best tax counsel, at every stage of their careers.
"Having Doug join us as a partner was a real coup for us," said Deborah Overholt, Regional Managing Partner of BLG's Vancouver office. "He is without a doubt one of the most skilled and respected tax lawyers in Canada, bringing a new leadership dimension to an already strong tax practice. He will be a magnet for some of the most exciting tax work in the country, and for the best legal talent who want to be involved with that work."
Mr. Powrie's 21-year legal career is highlighted by work on some of the biggest and most high profile transactions in Canada. Recent transactions in which Mr. Powrie served as Canadian tax counsel include the 2007 merger of Lundin Mining and Tenke Mining, creating a company valued at more than $5 billion on the day of the merger, the acquisition by Teck Cominco Ltd. of a 50 per cent interest in Lease 14 in the Alberta oil sands, and the takeover bid by Finning International Inc. for Collicutt Energy Services.
He was also Canadian tax counsel to Lundin Mining in its $900-million takeover bid for Rio Narcea in 2007, and Canadian tax counsel to Ballard Corp. in the sale of its automotive fuel cell assets to Daimler AG and Ford.
"When thinking about coming to BLG it was important to me that I be able to practice law with a firm that focuses on the interests of the clients," said the 1987 graduate of the University of Western Ontario's combined law and MBA program, where he was a gold medalist in both the law school and the combined law-MBA program. "As lawyers we exist to serve the interests of clients in a timely and effective way, and I know that BLG shares that belief and a commitment to unparalleled client service."

Innovative, New Legal Project Helps Vulnerable Youth in Calgary and Surrounding Areas
Unique joint initiative provides greater access to legal services and representation to safeguard the future of Calgary’s underprivileged youth
Calgary, AB (October 30, 2007) – Children and youth in Calgary and surrounding areas have the opportunity to access free legal assistance, representation, and legal education through the newly announced Child Advocacy Pro Bono Project.
The new project was founded through a new joint initiative with national law firm Borden Ladner Gervais LLP, the Children’s Legal Education Resource Centre (CLERC), brokered by Pro Bono Law Alberta, to help vulnerable children and youth access fundamental legal services they would otherwise be unable to access or pay for in a variety of civil law matters.
“BLG is committed to supporting our local communities, and is very proud to be a founding member of such an important initiative,” said David Whelan, Managing Partner at BLG Calgary. “BLG professionals personally commit their expertise and time with various pro bono projects across Canada to support such causes. The Child Advocacy Pro Bono Project will provide greater access to legal services for underprivileged children in Alberta.”
BLG’s involvement in the project is being coordinated locally by BLG partner Bruce Churchill-Smith. As part of the firm’s national pro bono policy and commitment to the project, lawyers from BLG’s Calgary office will volunteer their time to help represent qualifying children and youth in civil law cases identified by the Children’s Legal and Educational Resource Centre. To date, BLG lawyers have already assisted on two separate civil cases related to the project.
“CLERC is extremely pleased to be working with BLG,” said Dale Hensley, Executive Director
Children's Legal and Educational Resource Centre. “With BLG’s support, CLERC’s capacity to assist young people with legal problems will be greatly increased. Whether we are assisting young people with access to education, avoiding unlawful eviction, acquiring final pay cheques or ensuring young people acquire their rightful inheritances, BLG’s involvement and support will greatly enhance our service delivery to these vulnerable youth. The young people we serve struggle with legal issues well beyond their capacity to manage alone and have no where else to turn for legal support. “
“As the first pro bono project brokered by Pro Bono Law Alberta, we could not have asked for a better first example of what the projects and programs of Pro Bono Law Alberta hope to accomplish,” said Rod Jerke, QC, President of Pro Bono Law Alberta. “This project brings together the needs of a vulnerable group (children) together with a major law firm that provides the legal expertise for representation, education and research on a pro bono basis in Calgary.”
The Law Society of Alberta established Pro Bono Law Alberta as a 100th anniversary legacy project. This non-profit organization promotes access to justice in Alberta by creating opportunities for lawyers to provide free legal services to persons of limited means.

Leading national law firm creates endowed chair in energy law and policy at U of A
First of its kind in Canada, the Borden Ladner Gervais LLP Chair in Energy Law and Policy will significantly bolster energy law education
For Immediate Release
September 25, 2007
EDMONTON, AB
A $1.5-million donation from one of the country’s leading national law firms will enable the University of Alberta’s Faculty of Law to create an endowed Chair and strengthen its expertise in energy law and policy.
“Borden Ladner Gervais LLP is dedicated to supporting thought leadership, academic excellence and policy development for Alberta’s dynamic energy sector,” says David Whelan, managing partner for the Firm’s Calgary office. “This initiative demonstrates BLG’s commitment to excellence in legal education and to leading edge advancement of Alberta and Canada’s energy policies.”
“The energy industry is important to Canada and to BLG,” said Sean Weir, national managing partner of BLG. “Supporting education is a fundamental tradition for the entire Firm, with this gift we will help serve law students, the energy sector, and, ultimately, all of Canada.”
The creation of the endowed Chair will accomplish several goals: first, it will recruit a leading world scholar in energy law and policy; second, it will provide a fertile learning environment for the recruitment of top graduate students; and, it will provide a cutting edge scholarship that serves the energy sector, and Canadians at large.
The BLG endowed Chair role also supports the University’s goal of hiring 100 new professors each year for the next five years.
“This generous donation will help our school recruit an internationally recognized scholar and ensure our students are learning from one of the world’s foremost authorities on energy law and policy,” says Dean of the Faculty of Law David Percy. “We will begin our search for an eminent scholar immediately.”
The University is matching the BLG donation dollar for dollar, with funding from the Province of Alberta’s Access to the Future Fund. The Fund was established by the Provincial Government and is being invested in an endowment fund. The interest generated from the Fund is being used to provide seed money for innovations in the post secondary system, as well as matching grants to stimulate private, industry, and other contributions to the advanced learning system.
“We greatly appreciate the support from Borden Ladner Gervais for a research and teaching environment in an area that is crucial to the long term vitality and prosperity of both our province and country,” says U of A President Indira Samarasekera. “The University of Alberta is becoming a global magnet for talent, and this support will draw a world class scholar that will further enhance our existing legal expertise and strong engineering and business scholarship related to energy.”
The donation from BLG pushes the University of Alberta’s Campaign 2008 fundraising effort past the $418 million mark. Originally set at $310 million, the U of A’s new fundraising goal is to raise $500 million by the end of its centenary year of 2008.

UBC Law Faculty receives $1 million gift from Borden Ladner Gervais and Ladner family
VANCOUVER, April 2, 2007 - The University of British Columbia’s Faculty of Law today received gifts totaling $1 million from Borden Ladner Gervais LLP (BLG) and the Ladner family to support its building campaign. UBC plans to construct a new facility on the existing law school site at its Vancouver campus.
“The gifts from BLG and the pioneering B.C. Ladner family will enable the Faculty of Law to provide an enhanced learning environment for future generations of law students,” says UBC Dean of Law Mary Anne Bobinski. “We’re delighted with their generous and longstanding commitment to legal education at UBC.”
In recognition of this gift, UBC will name a prominent lecture theatre “Ladner Hall” in memory of Thomas E. Ladner Q.C., who passed away last year.
These donations will be matched by the Law Foundation of British Columbia – which in January committed a $6 million matching grant in support of the Faculty of Law's building project – resulting in $2 million toward construction of the new law school building.
“The partners of BLG have a strong tradition of giving back to the community and supporting education generally through programs such as BLG Reads to Kids, and the Faculty of Law in particular through the BLG Research Fellowships and by teaching courses at the law school” says Tim Sehmer, Managing Partner of BLG's Vancouver office. “We’re very pleased to be able to continue that tradition by presenting this gift to honour the memory of Tom Ladner.”
Speaking on behalf of the Ladner family, Peter Ladner, a Vancouver City Councilor, says, "This gift is a wonderful tribute to our father, Tom Ladner. We are very proud to partner with BLG and UBC to recognize the contributions that he and our grandfather, Leon Ladner, made to the legal and greater community in British Columbia.”
In February 2004, BLG announced a $1 million national fellowship program to support legal research in Canada over a five-year period. BLG Research Fellowships are awarded to law students at 14 law schools across the country as they undertake specific legal research initiatives under the direction of prominent faculty members. Since 2004, two UBC Law students have been selected each year as BLG Fellowship recipients.
In addition to hiring many UBC alumni, BLG is a founding gold affiliate member of the UBC National Centre for Business Law. The Firm provides the Professional Excellence Award to top UBC Law students and also supports a number of faculty- and student-driven initiatives such as the Pan-Pacific Business Law Conference and the Faculty’s annual conference on insolvency.
In 1911, Leon Ladner (1884 -1978) founded Ladner Downs. He was a leading proponent for the establishment of a system of formal legal education in B.C. His son, Thomas Ladner (1916 - 2006) built and expanded Ladner Downs – now the Vancouver office of BLG – into one of the leading law firms in B.C.
Background
UBC Faculty of Law
UBC Faculty of Law is one of the world’s leading law schools. Its graduates have assumed leadership positions, both nationally and internationally, in the legal profession, government, the judiciary, public interest organizations, business and academia. Faculty are respected worldwide for their excellence in teaching and innovative research. UBC Law offers its students one of the largest and most diverse course lists in Canada.
UBC Law Building
A 1995 assessment of the UBC Law Faculty building, which opened in 1944, revealed moisture and ventilation problems in addition to outmoded teaching spaces and serious deficiencies in classroom and office accessibility.
The proposed facility will include both small classrooms and large lecture halls with a new, state-of-the-art UBC Law Library serving as a vital academic hub for students and the legal community.

CALGARY, Jan. 18, 2007 – Borden Ladner Gervais LLP (BLG) announced today that former Alberta Premier the Honourable Ralph Klein will join the national law firm as a senior business advisor.
“Ralph has shown throughout his career that he values many of the things we believe are essential to providing the best legal service in Canada,” said BLG National Managing Partner Sean Weir. “The strong public support he enjoyed, leading four majority governments during 14 years, is proof that he listens to people and understands their needs, and of course he has always believed in clear, straightforward communication.”
Mr. Klein will be based in BLG’s Calgary office and will serve BLG clients across the country. “Mr. Klein can provide unparalleled insight for companies looking to make investments in Alberta and across Canada,” said BLG National Co-chair Douglas Mitchell. “He is looking forward to going out and speaking to BLG clients and prospective clients across North America and around the world.”
Mr. Klein resigned as premier on Dec. 14, 2006, exactly 14 years after he first took the office. He resigned his seat in the Alberta Legislative Assembly Jan. 15, 2007.
“I accepted BLG’s offer because it’s a well run, truly national firm, with a great presence in Alberta, and because it’s a firm made up of people who I respect,” said Mr. Klein. “They listen to people, they understand their clients’ business needs, they’re accessible and they don’t talk like a bunch of lawyers.”
Mr. Klein rose to public prominence in Calgary in 1980, when he won the first of three successive terms as mayor. He moved from municipal to provincial politics in 1989, becoming a member of the legislative assembly for the riding of Calgary Elbow, and serving as environment minister.
As premier, Mr. Klein created a fiscally responsible government that led to an unprecedented economic boom in Alberta. His successful political career has given him invaluable business experience and connections across Canada. And his economic development initiatives in Washington, D.C. have made him one of Canada’s most highly regarded representatives in that country.
“Ralph is able to provide uniquely valuable insights to our clients as they look to do business in Alberta, in Canada, and in North America,” said Mr. Weir.
